Today Zuri Gia decided to take a small road trip and
travelled back in time to an old mysterious occult that could easily be defined
as “the country”. We are following our premade guidelines of finding you places
that are off the beaten tourist track, and are doing so by filling up an entire
tank of petrol and driving into the unknown.
With our paper map spread across the bonnet, we closed our
eyes and placed a finger on a point. Rosewood. An old country town.
You may have seen them in the movies or heard stories about them,
but let us tell you it’s far from the truth. We promise you that this country adventure
involved no wild animals or hitchhikers.
After travelling for what seemed like hours, we pulled off
the highway and straight onto a dirt track. Taking a left here and a right
there, with no real destination in mind, we pulled over on the side of a
deserted road. This road in particular had a wheat farm on one side, and an old
cattle station on the other. The road was dead straight and extended miles until
it met the mountains in the far distance.
It wasn't long until the owner of the cattle station drove
his old 1981 Toyota ute over to us to have a good ‘ol chat. He reminisced of his adolescence when he
would sing and read poems to the beautiful girls who would walk past. And then,
in his old country slang, he proceeded to sing to us the words that he wrote as
a young boy.
Pressed up against the old wooden fencing, he told us the
stories of when he tried to pursue his dreams by performing in the local talent
show. He talked in the past and seemed to have no drive for the future, but he
was happy. He was happy being the person that he was and spending each day with
his best mate, his German Shepard.
As we left the old farmer, it became apparent to us that his
kind words, humble nature, and free spirit defined what it was to be the
Australian battler. We don't intend to be political or patriotic, but
adventures into the unknown should open eyes. And in this story, on this very day, we met
someone who had worked 80 years under the scorching Australian sun. Someone who
just wanted to make his mark as the provider to the local butcher in Rosewood,
Australia.
A true Aussie blue.
